Your SeCan Board of Directors met in advance of the SeCan member training event in Cancun Mexico. This provided an excellent opportunity for networking with members from across Canada and for meeting with Doug Lipp who led two half days of exceptional professional development training.

Of particular focus for the SeCan Board was a detailed review of this year’s member survey and recently finalized financial results from the 2022 reporting year. While overall survey results continue to be very positive (click here for complete survey results), we noted there was a modest decline in members’ confidence that SeCan is taking all necessary steps to ensure strong protection of intellectual property (i.e. enforcement of Plant Breeders’ Rights). Given the critical nature of IP protection to members’ businesses, it was discussed that SeCan management step up communications around monitoring and enforcement activities. Again, if you have concerns or can provide any tips relating to IP violations in your area, please reach out to a SeCan representative.

From a financial perspective, SeCan reported a net surplus of $814,949 in 2022 – which the Board determined will be restricted for future research activities.

It was also decided the SeCan Annual Meeting will be held virtually on Wednesday July 5 at 10:00 am eastern. However all SeCan members are encouraged to join our in-person event in St. John’s Newfoundland on Sunday July 9 – see invitation here.
