About this article

The Board met recently in conjunction with the virtual SeCan Annual General Meeting and reviewed operational progress on key files. Particular focus was placed on SeCan’s actions to support and advocate for strengthened public and private plant breeding in Canada. Recent announcements of federal funding and program cuts have raised awareness of this topic, and SeCan has been taking every opportunity to amplify members’ concerns and reinforce the importance of sustained investment in plant breeding.

Thank you to members who participated in SeCan’s 2026 investment survey. SeCan members have approximately $1.7 billion invested in infrastructure to facilitate the delivery of new seed innovation. The survey allows us to quantify this and other metrics in support of sustained investment in plant breeding. This kind of data is highly valuable in advocating for a strong “Made in Canada” solution to declining support for public plant breeding.

With a 50-year track record of success behind us, we believe SeCan’s financial resources and deep level of seed industry expertise position us well for future success.

Thank you for your continued engagement and support.

Have a wonderful summer, and Happy Canada Day!
