Hello SeCan Members, Your SeCan Board of Directors met last week (March 4 – 6) in Guelph, Ontario. This was an excellent opportunity to connect in-person with our plant breeding partners at the University of Guelph and also with Grain Farmers of Ontario (GFO) – a key funding partner with SeCan in supporting many eastern Canadian research programs. Of particular focus was the use of new technologies – such as molecular markers, genomic selection, and counter-season production – to accelerate the development of leading wheat and soybean varieties. The Board also reviewed the recently finalized financial results from last year. SeCan reported a net surplus of $1.857 million in 2023. The Board allocated $500,000 to SeCan’s Contingency Fund, with the balance going to the Restricted Research Fund that now stands at $13.315 million. This Fund continues to provide security for the organization to enter into long-term commitments with plant breeding institutions across Canada. It was also decided the SeCan Annual Meeting will be held virtually on Wednesday, June 26 at 10:00 am eastern. Watch for future emails with a call for nominations and AGM details. As always, we encourage you to contact us with comments or concerns. |
