Hello SeCan Members, Your SeCan Board of Directors recently met in conjunction with the GrowCanada conference in Ottawa. We took this opportunity to visit with AAFC breeders at the Ottawa Research and Development Centre (ORDC). Directors received updates from the various plant breeding programs, including spring and winter wheat, soybeans, barley and oats. The Board also met with senior AAFC Management to discuss the government’s long-term objectives relating to breeding in these various crop types, and the role SeCan is expected to play in the years ahead. In addition, we connected with senior management from Grain Farmers of Ontario – a joint funding partner with SeCan in supporting public breeding programs. These meetings were viewed as highly valuable to the SeCan membership – because Directors could voice the concerns of independent seed businesses, and the critical nature of maintaining a strong pipeline of improved varieties into the future. The Board has also been conducting the member survey – done every two years – to measure the organization’s progress over time. We will discuss the in-person and online results at the winter Board meeting and plan to report on “what we heard”. As always, please contact us if you have thoughts to share. We wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas! All the best for a healthy and prosperous 2025!
