Hello Midge Busters!

The 2023 wheat midge forecasts are out - and it looks like there could be more pressure than in 2022. Last year we learned “you can’t turn your back on wheat midge” according to Dr. Tyler Wist. Areas that showed light pressure still ended up with midge pressure. And that midge do have multiple flushes depending on rainfall.

We are back with the third year of data collection in 2023. This year we are planning three different options for participation:

  1. Scout – the basic program – place the trap and do 10 counts (two per week for 5 weeks from June 20-July 20)
  2. Entomologist in development – the basic program above, plus place and count yellow sticky cards over the same 5 week period
  3. In addition to the two tasks above, participants collect wheat heads from the field (just prior to harvest) and send them to Dr. Wist for evaluation.

We hope to have greater participation than ever - with traps across the Prairies - to support the efforts of Dr. Wist and his team to learn more about the forecasting and control of wheat midge.

If you are interested in participating – sign up here.

Note the traps are being supplied at no charge all we ask is that all traps sent be set up and counts taken.

We look forward to an engaging and informative Midge Busters season!

Wishinig you a safe and efficient spring season.
