Hello SeCan Members,

Your SeCan Board of Directors met in Saskatoon on November 22 and 23 in conjunction with the Saskatchewan fall member business meeting. The Board took the opportunity to meet with many plant breeders from the Crop Development Centre (CDC) and engage in discussions with the Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission and the Canadian Wheat Research Coalition, as well as Dr. Richard Cuthbert (wheat breeder) from AAFC Swift Current and Dr. Curtis Pozniak (director and durum breeder) from the CDC. Discussions focused on SeCan’s support for public breeding programs and ways to most strategically enhance capacity going forward – given our concern with AAFC’s stated goal of moving away from the final stages of variety testing and variety registration.

Overall, the Board felt re-affirmed that our investments in building testing capacity are on target to meet the needs of our members. This strategy will clearly require more resources in the future and both our financial reserves and strong partnerships with producer groups will be vital to continue to meet our mission of driving member success.

The Board will be having similar strategic meetings with our partners at the University of Guelph and Grain Farmers of Ontario in conjunction with our winter Board meeting.

Best wishes for a safe and joyous holiday season!
