The Board met recently in conjunction with the virtual SeCan Annual Meeting and reviewed operational progress on key files, including an update on plant breeding partners. During the annual meeting a question was raised about the Board’s position on advocating for the necessary changes and improvements to cereal seed breeding and variety development. While SeCan currently sources genetics from over 40 different public and private breeding programs, AAFC remains the single most important source of cereal varieties for Canadian farmers and seed growers. Thanks to CSGA’s Doug Miller for his article bringing attention to the critical role AAFC’s breeding and research infrastructure plays in driving the entire seed industry. We echo Doug’s comments – both public and private investment in the seed industry is needed. There is a void in the creation of a more coordinated, long-term approach to stabilizing and growing support for plant breeding in Canada. We recognize that as independent seed companies, many of you have concerns about the ongoing viability of the plant breeding entities that have helped build your businesses. Rest assured this is the highest priority for SeCan as we strive to continue offering leading products that will keep your operation growing. Have a wonderful summer. Happy Canada Day!
