Hello SeCan Members,

Last week your SeCan Board of Directors met in conjunction with GrowCanada in Calgary. The Board took this opportunity to meet with industry partners, including those based in Alberta. Meetings were held with WCI (Western Crop Innovations), Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada, and Bayer Crop Science. The Board also met with Doug Miller from CSGA to discuss new opportunities for collaboration and joint advocacy relating to support for public plant breeding.

A common theme in all meetings was SeCan’s desire to see unencumbered member access to new innovations. The Board feels strongly that open access to new products of plant breeding is critical to the strength of Canada’s seed system, and is essential to maintaining the exceptional level of investment that has been made collectively by SeCan members.

The Board also discussed plans for SeCan’s 50th anniversary celebrations in 2026. One of the initiatives will be a major communications effort to raise awareness of the need to strengthen public plant breeding. As SeCan members you will be hearing more about this project, and we hope you will help tell our stories of success, and join us for the upcoming celebrations.

Western Regional Director Peter Entz has retired from the Board and a replacement will be appointed to fill the vacancy.

Finally, the Board recognized and thanked General Manager Jeff Reid for 20 years of service to SeCan.

From the SeCan Board, we wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas, and a safe, healthy, and Happy New Year!
