Dear SeCan Members, Many of you may be aware of recent staffing reductions and potential closures of AAFC research facilities, including Lacombe, Indian Head, and others. While some cuts were not totally unexpected, it does represent a substantial reduction in AAFC’s research capacity, and raises the urgency of finding new solutions. SeCan has been preparing for government budget cuts and working toward longer-term solutions to protect plant breeding capacity in Canada. Solutions will require producer groups and other key stakeholders to work together to build and fund new capacity. Consideration is being given to a range of structures that will ensure SeCan members and farmers continue to benefit from broad access to leading new varieties. The voices of SeCan members and others in the seed sector matter now more than ever. Together, we can raise the level of concern directly with federal officials. More to come in the weeks ahead, including specific actions members can take to raise awareness in a coordinated and constructive way. As always, thank you for your engagement and support. Sincerely, Jeff Reid |
